image about Networking in the Present and in the Digital Age: What Lies Ahead?

Networking and relationship building have always been the cornerstone of success for Business Development Managers. However, in recent times, there’s been a noticeable shift – a tendency towards complacency, fading connections, and a reliance on digital communication that lacks the personal touch we should be cherishing. It’s crucial to recognise the importance of in-person interactions and phone conversations in preserving genuine human connection.

The Current State Of Networking

Traditionally, networking involved attending conferences, local meetups, and events, where face-to-face interactions were important. These gatherings provided a platform to build trust, exchange ideas, and establish meaningful connections that often translated into fruitful collaborations, business deals, and a steady stream of leads.

However, with the digital communication tools and the shift to hybrid work, the landscape of networking has changed. While virtual platforms offer convenience, they often fall short in replicating the richness of in-person interactions. Phone calls and emails have their place, but nothing quite compares to a handshake or the sincerity of a face-to-face conversation.

Challenges in the Digital Realm:

Despite the convenience of digital networking, there appear to be challenges. Virtual interactions lack the depth and spontaneity of in-person encounters. More communication happening via DM’s instead of initiating a meet up, when did people get too “busy” to want to catch up in person? Without seeing someone’s body language, feeling someone’s energy and observing facial expressions, conversations can feel scripted and impersonal.

Embracing Digital Innovation:

While the digital age presents opportunities for innovation in networking, it’s important  not to lose sight of the value of human connection, especially in Property Management where most of my clients have said they love working in the industry to meet new people however some struggle where to start to connect with someone, what do I say when I call and when I meet them how should our catch up go?

Virtual networking platforms, social media channels, and AI-powered tools offer new avenues to expand our reach and engage with a broader audience. These digital tools enable us to transcend geographical barriers and access resources with ease.

Looking Ahead:

As we look to the future, balance between traditional networking practices and digital innovation is key. While digital tools can enhance efficiency and broaden our horizons, they should complement, not replace, in-person interactions and phone conversations. Hybrid networking models that blend the best of both worlds are likely to dominate, offering a seamless fusion of personal connections and digital convenience.

Let’s also remember the importance of forging meaningful relationships in person. As Business Development Managers, it’s important to have the skill to adapt to new trends but also to nurture authentic connections that nurture long lasting relationships.
