Embarking on a journey of personal growth can feel like stepping into uncharted territory, especially when facing daunting challenges head-on. Yet, as I recently discovered through my first-ever public speaking event (on a panel, no more—so at least we aren’t talking about a scripted presentation here – phew!), embracing these challenges can lead to incredibly rewarding experiences.
Public speaking has always been a source of jitters for me. I mean, who doesn’t feel a flutter of nerves when faced with something new and unfamiliar, right? But instead of letting fear hold me back, I decided to take the plunge after Ashleigh Goodchild offered me the chance to join a panel at her PM Collective Power Moves event. Little did I know, this leap of faith would not only push me out of my comfort zone but also unlock valuable insights I’m eager to share with others in the real estate industry who might be feeling the same way.
Step 1: Choose the Right Speaking Opportunity
First things first—finding the perfect speaking gig is key. Whether it’s cozying up to events like Coffee & Conversations with PM Collective or reaching out to industry organizers, starting small can help build confidence and provide invaluable practice and feedback opportunities.
Step 2: Preparation and Passion
Here’s the scoop: pick a topic you’re absolutely jazzed about. For me, it was all about social media and the magic that happens behind the camera—talk about a passion project! And prep? Essential. I had a few tricks up my sleeve, anticipating questions and making sure my answers were as authentic as they come. Oh, and being on a panel? It’s like having a casual chat with friends, so don’t sweat it if things veer off-script a bit. Confidence in your topic is your secret weapon!
Step 3: Overcoming Stage Nerves
Game day arrived, and let me tell you, I was a mix of excitement and a tad nervous. But instead of hiding under the table (tempting!!), I realised that most of the room I was in front of where friends, industry colleagues and the like, so I faced the challenge head-on. Drawing on my passion for the topic, I walked onto that stage (hoping I wouldn’t stack it) with some confidence and a smile.
Celebrating Small Victories
Conquering my fear of public speaking felt like winning the gold medal at the Olympics (well, almost!). It gave me a renewed sense of purpose and pride, showing me that breaking down big challenges into bite-sized pieces can make the journey less intimidating and way more fun.
Looking Ahead
Armed with a newfound confidence, I’m gearing up for my next speaking gig with gusto. So here’s my challenge to you: identify what makes your heart sing, break those goals into manageable chunks, and dive headfirst into personal growth. Trust me, the possibilities are endless when you dare to step out of your comfort zone and embrace the journey.
Remember, we’re all a work in progress, and that’s the beauty of it. Let’s make this journey of personal growth one heck of a ride!
